XCTD, eXpendable CTD

The XCTD is an expendable probe capable of reaching over 1,000 m of depth when dropped from a moving ship. The hydrodynamically designed probe contains a conductivity sensor, a temperature sensor, a battery, and system electronics.

Temperature and conductivity data from probe sensors are transmitted to the surface by wire. Depth is calculated from the well known drop rate of the probe.

This data, in digital form, is collected, stored, and displayed by the XCTD data acquisition system.
