The deep sea is known as an extreme environment with a stable low temperature and very high hydrostatic pressure.
Microorganisms living at the sea bottom may have special mechanisms for adaptation to such extreme conditions. Many deepsea bacteria are specifically adapted to flourish under the high hydrostatic pressures which exist in their natural environment.
The Tsurumi Seiki Co. Ltd. designed a Deep Sea Bacteria Cultivator that allows marine bacteria to cultivate under similar deep sea pressure conditions.

Principle of operation
The pressure is generated by hydrostatic pressure with a hand operated
pump (see lever and the pump).. Sampled water is placed in the
pressure tank. The hand-operated lever is moved up and down to
generate desired pressure. Water in the chamber is sent to the pressure
tank by the hand-operated pump which pressurizes water in the
pressure tank. The Valves V1, V2 and V3 are used for retaining pressure
and purging the surplus water.
Once the desirable pressure is generated and stabilized, the V3 valve on
the pressure tank is closed and the tank is removed to be stored in
desirable storage area to allow bacteria to cultivate.
Similarly another tank is connected to the inlet pipe for pressurizing
additional samples
